Classroom Management and Student Motivation

Disruption, low motivation and mixed-ability groups are the reality in most European classrooms. This course gives you a toolbox of tested strategies for creating a positive learning climate: clear routines and expectations, relationship-building, restorative approaches to conflict, and motivation techniques rooted in self-determination theory. We work with video cases, role play and micro-teaching, so that you practise each strategy before using it with your students. Time is reserved for the specific challenges participants bring from their own schools. Suitable for teachers in primary, lower and upper secondary education, as well as school counsellors.

Participants will be able to set up routines and expectations that prevent disruption, respond to challenging behaviour in a de-escalating and restorative way, and use motivation strategies (autonomy, competence, relatedness) to increase student engagement in their lessons.

Methods: case analysis with classroom video, role play and micro-teaching, peer coaching, expert input, individual action planning. Assessment: micro-teaching feedback using an observation sheet, daily reflection journal, presentation of a personal classroom management plan on day 5.
