Climate Education: From Facts to Action Projects

Climate change is on every curriculum but many teachers feel unsure about the science, the politics and the emotions it raises in students. This course combines up-to-date climate science in teacher-friendly form with pedagogy: how to teach without causing anxiety, how to deal with misinformation, and how to move from knowledge to student-led action projects. We visit a coastal monitoring site north of Porto to see climate impacts first-hand and work with local scientists. Participants leave with a lesson sequence and a project outline for their school. Suitable for science, geography and social science teachers, but open to all subjects, lower and upper secondary.

Participants will be able to explain the key mechanisms and evidence of climate change at a level appropriate for their students, apply methods for hope-oriented climate education, and plan a student action project with measurable outcomes.

Methods: expert input from climate scientists, inquiry-based workshops, data-based activities, field visit, project planning in teams, debate and misinformation analysis. Assessment: participants design and present a lesson sequence and action project; daily quick checks; peer and trainer feedback.
