Cyber Safety and Data Protection at School
Protect students and staff online: cyberbullying, digital wellbeing, GDPR and security.
Course description
Schools handle sensitive data every day and students face cyberbullying, scams and harmful content online. This course prepares teachers, ICT coordinators and school leaders to build a safe digital school. Topics include cyberbullying prevention and response, digital wellbeing and screen time, GDPR basics for teachers, safe use of cloud tools and AI, password and device security, and how to teach online safety at different ages. Estonia's experience with e-government and digital schooling provides real examples. Participants develop an action plan and a lesson on online safety. Suitable for teachers of all levels, ICT coordinators, counsellors and school leaders.
Learning objective
Participants will be able to recognise and respond to cyberbullying and online risks, apply GDPR principles to their daily work with student data and digital tools, improve basic security practices at their school and teach age-appropriate online safety lessons.
Teaching methods and assessment
Methods: case analysis, expert input from Estonian cyber safety specialists, scenario-based workshops, lesson design, policy workshop, school visit. Assessment: presentation of a cyber safety lesson and school action plan, scenario quiz, daily reflection.

Course handbook, cyberbullying response protocol template, GDPR checklist for teachers, lesson plans for online safety by age group, digital wellbeing resources, links to European Safer Internet Centres.
Course package

Welcome and participant presentations. Mapping online risks for students and staff. Estonia's digital school system as a case study. Roles and responsibilities in a school.
Cyberbullying and digital wellbeing
Recognising and responding to cyberbullying: protocols and conversations. Digital wellbeing, screen time and sleep. Working with parents.
GDPR and safe tools for teachers
Data protection principles in daily school life. Choosing and configuring cloud tools and AI safely. Passwords, devices and phishing. Expert session with a cyber safety specialist.
Teaching online safety
Age-appropriate online safety curricula. Designing lessons and student-led campaigns. School visit: how Estonian schools teach digital citizenship.
Action plan and transfer
Participants present their lesson and school action plan. Peer feedback. Erasmus+ documentation, evaluation and certificates.
